SAKATAORIMONO

WELCOME TO
KASURI NO SATO

“KASURI” is the most traditional style of fabric from Japan.
Thename is said to come from the way dyed fibres create patterns that seem“scratched / faded (Kasu-reru)”.
Kasuri from Kurume region is especially distinctive, in the way vertical and
horizontal threads are woven to create patterns that are highly complex, providing visual interest,
as well as provide excellent wearing comfort, that improves as they age.

In 1957, the highly complex and traditional style was registered as intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO.
This traditional craft has been inherited and perfected across three centuries.
However, textile production, is one of many arts that is affected by modernisation.
Number of production houses that can still weavetraditional Kurume-Kasuri is decreasing as years pass.

Here at Sakata-Orimono, they strive to not only preserve the tradition, but also create modern patterns and presentations,
as well as producing western style clothing and accessories that will appeal to the appetite of today.
Behind the chic styling, is a group of passionate craftsmen andwomen,
who are ready to defy convention and inherit not just the style, but passion for beauty and love of crafts.

This is Sakata-Orimono, the fabricator of Kurume-Kasuri.
